This post is not for everyone.
This is for the people who feel that they are under attack by the current administration – If that’s not you then we send you all the love, but this post isn’t yours.
This post is for the women who are afraid of what happens if they need to end a pregnancy. For the LGBTQ+ folx who want to love and live in peace. For our BIPOC friends who are fearful of death without trial. For our immigrant loved ones who want their families to come back to them. For those living in poverty who are wondering what to do if their benefits get cut.
Our hearts go out to you in empathy and in compassion. See, the thing is… we’re feeling the effects of all of this, too.
As Social Workers, we all agree to the same basic principles, according to the Social Worker Code of Ethics – Service, Social Justice, Dignity and Worth of Person, Importance of Human Relationships, Integrity, Competence… You can see why some people don’t like us right now.
But we think that if you’re looking at Notes on Mental Health that you might be like us… Afraid, passionate, enraged, anxious, determined. Ready to make a change, be the change, create a new world for us and for future generations.
Being a therapist right now is interesting. Usually when working with clients with trauma, I ground myself by reminding myself that the trauma is not happening to me and that it is not happening right now. This is how I can remain present with my clients in session. But when [enter any headline from the past few years here] happens, it is happening to your therapist alongside with you.
So, I can’t guarantee we have the right thing to say. I can’t promise that we will make everything, or anything, better.
What I can say is that we will see you in all your humanity.
We will offer validation and reassurance that this is a really hard time to be alive and there’s nothing wrong with you.
We will be kind when you’re experiencing something we can’t relate to, and we will be present when you describe something that happened to us at the grocery store yesterday.
We’re here. We’re waiting for you to take the next step in your mental health journey.
This is the moment. Start your healing now. Reach out to schedule an appointment today.
